Van Slyke Castle Ruins
Source note: Created from a Possibly Abandoned OpenStreetMap candidate. Matched OSM evidence: historic=ruins. Source: https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1377455905 The mansion was originally built in the early 1900s for a wealthy stockbroker named William Porter. It eventually ended up in the hands of Ruth Van Slyke, who used it as a summer getaway. After she died in 1940, the place was left abandoned, and in 1959, a fire destroyed most of the mansion. Nowadays, all that's left are these massive stone walls, crumbling staircases, old foundations, and a surprisingly intact water tower. The ruins are scattered around the mountainside, with trees and vines slowly taking over what's left. Getting there involves a pretty decent uphill hike, but it's absolutely worth it. Between the creepy old stonework, random structures hiding in the woods, and the gorgeous views of Ramapo Lake, the whole place feels like something straight out of a fantasy game. It's pretty popular to hike to and usually has a few people there depending on time of year and time of day. It's public in a state forest, so completely safe to explore as long as you aren't prone to tripping.
